Through AIRE’s “test before invest” demo projects, Estonian companies can test and validate AI and robotics technologies before making investments.

According to Katre Eljas, Head of AIRE, the centre wants demo projects to encourage companies to make greater use of AI-based digital and robotics solutions. “Estonia is lagging behind in the adoption of AI and robotics solutions, and we don’t mean language models, but the use of AI in business processes and in new products and services. Demo projects give companies the chance to test new, business-boosting solutions and gain confidence before making a larger investment. We can already say that adopting AI and robotics solutions increases companies’ productivity and profitability, and thereby their competitiveness. Novel AI and robotics solutions are tested and validated in cooperation with researchers.”

Submitted ideas must be innovative, and no similar solution may exist on the market. This could involve, for example, piloting a new product or service or developing a company’s processes. During a demo project, a solution based on AI, robotics or their enabling technologies is tested, piloted or validated.

To apply for a demo project, a company must first register for AIRE’s AI pre-consultation. The pre-consultation helps assess the company’s AI readiness and adoption level, its business problem and the AI or robotics solution, and, where needed, finds a development partner, which in turn makes applying for a demo project easier. The pre-round is open until 16 November.

In AIRE’s spring round, nine demo projects were selected, to be carried out in cooperation with Tallinn University of Technology, the University of Tartu, the Estonian University of Life Sciences, Tallinn University, IMECC and Tartu Science Park. A company can use up to €49,500 in state aid per project, and no co-financing is required.

Who is the programme for?

The programme is open to companies in the manufacturing sector and its supply chain (logistics, transport, ICT, quality control, etc.) with no more than 2,999 employees and an annual group turnover not exceeding €300 million. Companies in the defence, energy, agriculture and health technology sectors are also welcome.

It is important that the company has a strong interest in using AI to improve the efficiency of its products, services and business processes and to develop them further.

How to apply?

The demo project application is submitted by the company in cooperation with a researcher from an AIRE partner institution. Before submitting the application, the project concept must be validated with the AIRE team. The company must also involve its own specialist in the project, who will implement the solution within the company once the demo project ends.

The application round opens on 30 September, and applications are accepted until 30 November 2026. However, companies must register for AIRE’s AI pre-consultation by 16 November at the latest. The demo projects to be carried out will be announced in February.

More information: https://aire-edih.eu/en/service/demonstration-projects/

Between 2022 and 2025, 53 demo projects were carried out.
