New Collaboration Network in Estonia: Adapter Connects Science and Business
A collaboration network called Adapter, designed for businesses and research institutions, has begun operations, connecting Estonian universities and researchers with entrepreneurs to develop a smart and strong economy. This is the largest network of its kind in Estonia.
Adapter was originally created in 2016, and after a brief pause, it is now gaining new momentum and a modern platform through ASTRA+ funding.
According to TalTech’s Vice Rector for Entrepreneurship Erik Puura, Adapter’s goal is to support the smart development of Estonia’s economy.
“As a small country, we must do this together and intelligently. The network includes 25 research institutions and universities—this is a powerful knowledge base that companies should boldly use. We encourage entrepreneurs to dream big and boldly so that science can come to their aid—this is the only way to grow Estonia’s competitiveness. The meeting between entrepreneurs and researchers is extremely important because it is through communication, curiosity, and an open mind that beneficial collaboration is born.”
According to Adapter’s Executive Director Jaanus Vahesalu, the symbiosis between science and business is one of the most important success factors in modern business development.
“While science creates new knowledge and technologies, business gives them application and market value. It is precisely this collaboration that creates the foundation for innovative products and services that distinguish companies from competitors and increase the added value of the entire economy. Research-based business development is no longer a future direction but a prerequisite for today’s success. Often, parties cannot see the points of contact due to lack of awareness, short-term cooperation, or prejudices. The courage to meet, ask, show interest, and listen to each other—this is where collaboration is born.”
Through Adapter’s platform being created, companies can find and order applied research and analyses, laboratory measurements and testing, product development and prototyping, technical consulting, and other research collaboration. Finding an initial collaboration partner is free for the company; fees are agreed upon later in contractual cooperation.
In addition to the digital partnership platform, Adapter also encompasses various networking events, club activities, and international cooperation projects. The AI-assisted system helps companies find suitable research partners and solutions from one place.
Adapter’s activities are funded by the European Regional Development Fund and the ASTRA+ program, which aims to increase the impact of research and the knowledge transfer capacity of research institutions.
The collaboration network is coordinated by the AIRE Centre operating at TalTech.
