Estonian industrial companies are always looking for new solutions to better utilize the potential of AI. Be it the improvement of product quality control with the help of machine reading and collaboration robots, or the more economical use of the warehouse system through the automatic traceability and placement of products.
Tanel Eensoo, team leader of industrial engineers at the Kõu Mobility factory, said while introducing the demo project that the company wants to transfer product quality control from human labor to machine control. “We are looking for better solutions to replace visual inspection with machine vision and a collaborative robot, as the accuracy of human inspection is between 80-87%. Our goal is to increase this number in order to increase the efficiency of quality control and reduce the number of products with the possibility of error,” said Eensoo.
According to Eensoo, Comodule OÜ products are currently used in 750,000 electric small vehicles, in 60 cities, in 45 countries. “In the last two years, 200,000 and 130,000 IoT devices were produced respectively, so every error caught and avoided in the factory is extremely important,” he said.
Minimization of cost centers
Since 2013, Valdek AS, which specializes in sheet metal work, has developed the in-house digital production management software platform We-Soft, which includes all activities and tools related to the production process. Under the leadership of development manager Viljar Valdek, the implementation of smart solutions has made it possible to reduce the workforce in the company by at least a third compared to similar companies. “I believe that increasing product added value is not only about increasing the amount of additional components, but above all about the smart and efficient implementation of the entire production process,” said Valdek.
For the past two years, the company has cooperated with TalTech researchers and developed a test environment for a smart warehouse system that would be suitable for the conditions and needs of different companies.
Commenting on the cooperation project, Valdek, who is also a member of the company’s board, said that the biggest achievement for the company is saving time and human resources in non-profit-making activities. “Storage and logistics do not generate direct income for the company, but support production processes. Our goal is to minimize or eliminate the need for such activities. Automatic product traceability and storage, which is flexible and cost-effective at the same time, is one of the main strategies for manufacturing companies to remain competitive in Estonia,” he confirmed.
Valdek pointed out that the demo project has two main goals: “First, to create a fast and automated application that can generate a 3D environment with real coordinates from the company, where all cameras are calibrated and located in the same coordinate system. Secondly, to create an environment where it is possible to test different detection and tracking technologies and scenarios, based on the hypothesis we set in the project in 2020,” Valdek listed. “The longer-term goal is to introduce automated forklifts based on machine vision, to which we can give real coordinates in the company – where to look for something and where to take the material,” he added.
Good to know:
Comodule OÜ develops and manufactures IoT solutions for light electric vehicles. The company is an important part of the Kõu Mobility group, whose mission is to save people’s health by creating light mobility solutions that reduce urban pollution and noise and thereby improve our living environment. In addition to Comodule, it includes electric scooter manufacturer Äike, scooter rental service operator Tuul and electric bike manufacturer Ampler and their joint production unit Kõu Factory.
Valdek AS is an innovative, growing and continuously contributing to digitization and automation family business, which has been engaged in the production of sheet metal and copper profiles for over 30 years. The main technological directions are: product development, stamping, bending, assembly and painting. Valdek opened a new production building in Keila in 2023, with a production area of 6,400 m². In addition to Keila, there is also a production facility in Paldiski. In Valdekus, too, the topic is finding a reasonable balance between people’s workload, investing in smart equipment-technologies, green issues and profit. At the moment, the company has 70 employees, 8 of whom are family members, the turnover is 13 million.
