AIRE club #20 From industrial digitalisation to cyber security
Because we learn best from experience, this year’s club event will be combined with a company visit. As part of this year’s AIRE Club, we invite those interested in industry and digitalisation to visit the Tammer metal industry to learn more about two key topics for the industry: digitalisation and cybersecurity.
“It can be said that digitalisation affects all processes at Tammer – with our increased production volumes, it is impossible to manage on a daily basis without digitalisation. However, the more dependent we are on the digital world, the greater the direct risks become, which is why timely and competent cyber threat assessment and ensuring adequate cyber security are critical for our company.” – Indrek Kink, IT Manager at Tammer.
At 15.00, there will be a unique opportunity to visit the Tammer Metalworks, where the Tammer management will present the production background.
With more than 200 employees and a history of almost 30 years, Tammer is the largest producer of metalware in the Baltic States.
Over 40 000 project-based openings are produced annually on a production area of 14 000m² and exports account for more than 80% of production.
Tammer has invested heavily in digitisation and automation, and has already replaced many human-operated processes with robotics: what and how exactly can be seen with your own eyes on the production line.
There are still many ideas and thoughts to be had on which work steps are to be further automated and towards which more and more progress is being made every year. It is also worth noting that Tammer has been on a steady growth path over the last 10 years, growing from a company with a turnover of around 10 million to more than 30 million.
At 16:00, we will continue with the AIRE club programme, this time focusing on cyber security issues. Why are we dedicating this year’s AIRE Club to cybersecurity? According to ITL, there have been more than 50 ransomware incidents in Estonia in recent years, which have caused significant losses to businesses.
Ransomware attacks also pose a significant and growing threat to industrial companies.
Cyber criminals can encrypt a company’s important files, ERP systems and demand payment for their release. This can lead to downtime, data loss, financial damage and, in the worst case, even bankruptcy.
In today’s Internet of Things era, the majority of industry equipment is online, and if not deliberately secured, uninvited guests can gain access to equipment control systems, which can lead to sabotage of manufacturing processes, transmission of sensitive information, theft of manufacturing processes, designs or intellectual property.
Two recent studies (by the State Information System Agency (RIA) and the Statistical Office) show that Estonian small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) pay significantly less attention to cyber security than large companies and are therefore more vulnerable to cyber attacks.
In the AIRE Club, industry and experts will share their experiences and practical examples of how industrial companies can better face cyber threats.
• How to assess and find the balance between cybersecurity and business agility?
• How not to underestimate the risks, but at the same time avoid inconveniencing employees by “over-protecting” all systems?
• How to find the right cyber protection for an industrial company that matches the risk level of the company’s processes, and the challenges of making this choice?
• Who to call on when your own expertise is in short supply?
• What support measures can be used to raise the level of cyber security in the company?
